These ‘Backrooms’-Like Spots in the Philippines Are Freaking Netizens Out

Online posts about “backrooms-coded” spots surged after the announcement of a breakout experience tied to the film’s release.

The Philippines may already have its own version of the Backrooms—at least according to the internet.

Online posts comparing local malls, stairwells, and public spaces to the eerie aesthetic of Backrooms have been circulating across X (formerly Twitter) following the announcement of The Backrooms Breakout, an interactive experience tied to the film’s Philippine release.

Creazion Studios recently confirmed that the activation will run from May 23 to June 7 at Shangri-La Plaza, ahead of the film’s local premiere on June 3.

After posters for the event were released online, users began sharing photos and jokes about places around the country that resemble the film’s signature yellow-hallway imagery. Several posts referenced empty mall corridors, aging commercial spaces, office floors, and maze-like interiors in locations such as Ortigas, Cubao, Bacoor, and Pasig.

One post compared the Backrooms aesthetic to Gateway Mall in Cubao, while another referenced quiet shopping center hallways that “already look like the movie set.”

Other users uploaded photos of dim staircases and vacant passageways alongside captions describing them as “backrooms-coded.”

The upcoming film is based on the popular internet horror concept “The Backrooms,” which gained attention online through images and stories centered on endless liminal spaces—typically empty yellow rooms, hallways, and office-like interiors that feel unsettlingly familiar.

The film adaptation follows a therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, who ventures into a terrifying, alternate-reality dimension known as the Backrooms to rescue her patient, Clark

The online reactions continued after the breakout experience announcement, with users connecting the film’s visuals to places they have encountered in everyday life.

Backrooms opens in Philippine cinemas on June 3.
