‘Backrooms’ Is No. 1 Worldwide, but PH Screenings Are Limited

The internet horror phenomenon is currently the No. 1 movie in the world. In the Philippines, however, catching it may require a little more effort.

For a movie about getting lost in endless hallways, Backrooms is proving surprisingly difficult to find.

The internet-born horror phenomenon officially arrives in Philippine cinemas on June 3 after dominating the global box office. There’s just one catch: unlike most blockbuster releases, Backrooms will only be screening in select cinemas nationwide.

That limited rollout comes despite the film’s staggering international success.

Since its release, Backrooms has become the No. 1 movie in the world, earning over $118 million globally and setting multiple records, including the biggest opening weekend in A24 history, the largest debut for an original horror film, and the strongest opening ever for a first-time filmmaker.

For a project that started as an internet obsession, the numbers feel almost unreal.

Long before it reached cinemas, Backrooms already had a devoted online following. What began as a viral image of an empty yellow office space eventually evolved into one of the internet’s most recognizable horror myths, spawning countless theories, games, videos, and late-night rabbit holes.

Part of the appeal is how universal fear feels. There are no elaborate monsters to memorize or decades of franchise lore to catch up on. Just fluorescent lights, endless rooms, and the creeping feeling that something is wrong.
