After a three-year break from releasing music, Nadine Lustre is back with “Personal,” a sleek pop-R&B track about keeping outside opinions at a distance.

Nadine Lustre has never really left music behind. Even as acting, fashion, and other creative pursuits took up more of her career, music remained the first artistic space she knew.

Now, she is returning to it with “Personal,” a new single that reflects a version of Lustre that sounds less interested in looking back and more willing to experiment.

“I will be back in music,” Nadine says. “’Yun ’yung first love ko talaga.”

Before becoming known primarily as an actress, Lustre entered the entertainment industry through music. When she joined her current management, she became part of a girl group, making pop an early part of her artistic identity. Her relationship with the genre has since grown beyond the straightforward pop of her earlier releases.

“Hindi naman ako completely jaded with pop,” she explains. “Sobrang wide naman ’yung range ng pop. Pop just means popular.”

That broad definition gives Lustre room to explore without completely stepping outside the genre.

“When it comes to sound naman, it can be a bit experimental, but still be pop.”

“Personal” sits within a certain space with its sleek production and restrained delivery that reflects a more mature direction for Lustre, who is no longer trying to recreate the sound associated with the beginning of her career.

“Siguro hindi na ’yung bubblegum pop katulad nung Paligoy-Ligoy,” she says. “Tsaka 32 na po ako. Parang hindi na naaayon sa akin ’yung ganun!”

While she acknowledges that the songs from her earlier pop years remain part of her story, they no longer have to define her relationship with music.

“Okay na ’yung mga songs before, i-play na lang nila ’yun,” she jokes.

Over the years, Nadine has moved between acting, music, fashion, business, and a quieter life away from Manila, gradually developing a more defined sense of what she wants from her career.

Siargao, in particular, has become part of that shift. Speaking about her life on the island, Lustre describes it as a grounding experience after years of living in the city.

“Nung pumunta ako ng Siargao… it grounded me again,” she shares with ZEEN.

“Personal” is a song about keeping certain things at a distance, but its release also reflects Lustre’s ability to decide what parts of her past she wants to carry forward.

The result is a return to music without the pressure to recreate an earlier version of herself. Pop is still part of the equation, but this time, Lustre gets to define what that sounds like and “Personal” marks the beginning of that next chapter.
