Two Years Later, Cup of Joe’s “Multo” Is Still Haunting the Narrative

Two years after its release, Cup of Joe’s “Multo” continues to rack up streams, inspire endless interpretations, and take the band to bigger stages.

Cup of Joe’s “Multo” has become a familiar soundtrack for heartbreak, grief, regret, missed chances, and the people or memories that refuse to stay in the past. Across TikTok and X, listeners have continued sharing their own interpretations of what their multo means, turning Cup of Joe’s song into something much bigger than its original story.

Cup of Joe vocalist Rapha Ridao and his brother Red wrote the song while they were stuck at home, processing feelings that had stayed with them. Ridao later explained that the song was about the way certain emotions can continue following you even after time has passed.

Listeners embraced this concept, interpreting the multo as an ex, a lost loved one, a broken friendship, a regret, or an abandoned dream. The song’s open emotional nature allowed fans to project their own experiences onto it, spawning the online “my multo” trend where users shared personal stories. Consequently, this digital engagement became as crucial to the song’s impact as its chart success.

On X and TikTok, the song has become shorthand for the things people cannot quite let go of. A post does not always need to explain the entire story; sometimes, saying “my multo” is enough. That collective interpretation is part of what separates “Multo” from a song that simply goes viral.

“Multo” topped the Billboard Philippines Hot 100 for a record 27 consecutive weeks and became the first song by a Filipino act on the Billboard Global 200. These milestones fueled Cup of Joe’s expansion into major live shows, including a sold-out three-night run at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in October 2025 and Sandali: The Cup of Joe Fest at the Philippine Sports Stadium in 2026.

Now, Cup of Joe is preparing for another major live milestone with “Symphony: Live at the Big Dome” on December 3, 2026. The concert will bring the band’s catalog into a new orchestral setting at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. They are also doing Sandali Stops amidst the Sandali era,

The biggest story behind “Multo” may not be its streams or chart records, impressive as they are. It is the fact that people are still finding new ways to make the song theirs. A breakup can be a multo. So can grief. A childhood dream. A person you never got to confess your feelings to. A version of yourself you cannot quite stop missing.

Two years later, its listeners have continued writing the rest of its story. And as the band moves toward bigger stages, “Multo” remains right there with them.
