Alex Eala added another first to her growing résumé.

The Filipina tennis star claimed the Birmingham Open title after defeating Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in a tightly contested final on June 7. The result gave Eala her first title of the 2026 season and her first career championship on grass, a surface often regarded as one of the sport’s most demanding.

The matchup carried an unusual twist. Just days before meeting in the singles final, Eala and Bartunkova had partnered in the tournament’s doubles draw. This time, they stood on opposite sides of the net, with the trophy on the line.

Entering the tournament as the top seed, Eala navigated the week without dropping out of contention despite several challenging stretches, culminating in a comeback victory after losing the opening set in the final.

The win also ended a personal drought. Bartunkova became the first Czech opponent Eala has beaten on the professional circuit, a notable breakthrough given the number of Czech players occupying the upper tiers of women’s tennis.

Grass has not always been the surface most associated with Eala’s game. Birmingham, however, offered a different picture. Across the week, she looked increasingly comfortable moving through longer rallies and adjusting to the quicker conditions that define the grass-court season.

The title arrives just weeks before the sport’s attention shifts to Wimbledon, where Eala will look to carry that momentum onto tennis’ most famous lawns.
