Alex Eala just had a career-defining moment on the global tennis stage.
At the ASB Classic in Auckland, the Filipina tennis player teamed up with American teenager Iva Jovic to defeat Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina in a doubles match, winning 7–6, 6–1. The match placed Eala and Jovic against two of the sport’s most established names, drawing attention to the young pair’s performance early in the tournament.
The first set went to a tiebreak, with both teams holding serve before Eala and Jovic edged out the opening frame. In the second set, the duo pulled ahead early and asserted control to close out the match in straight sets.
The duo’s triumph quickly circulated online, prompting reactions from tennis fans who highlighted the significance of a young Filipina athlete competing and winning against players with multiple Grand Slam titles and Olympic experience.
Off the court, the moment carried over online. Eala later shared an Instagram Story featuring a selfie with doubles partner Iva Jovic. The post was later reposted by Jovic on her own account, with a caption ‘making me blush’ in response to Eala’s “you’re epic,” a glimpse into the winning partnership behind that extended beyond the scoreboard and into shared celebration.

Eala’s career is still unfolding, with the 20-year-old continuing to compete across international tournaments as she builds experience on the professional circuit.
From sharing the court with established figures in the sport to recording a win against them, Eala’s appearance at the ASB Classic adds another milestone to her growing résumé.
