Fame looks good on Anne Hathaway. Peace of mind? Not so much.
In Mother Mary, the Oscar winner transforms into a global music icon staging a massive comeback while reckoning with the one relationship she could never rewrite. The A24 psychological pop thriller opens in Philippine cinemas on April 22, exclusively distributed by CreaZion Studios.
The story zeroes in on Mother Mary’s uneasy reunion with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm, portrayed by Michaela Coel. On the eve of a high stakes performance, old wounds resurface, blurring the line between creative partnership and emotional betrayal. The film poses a question that lingers long after the music fades: how much of yourself do you give up to stay adored?
Written and directed by David Lowery, the visionary behind The Green Knight and A Ghost Story, the film trades straightforward music biopic beats for something moodier and more unnerving. Backed by A24, Mother Mary leans into spectacle while dissecting vanity, fame, and the ghosts that trail behind success.
The soundtrack is just as deliberate.
Original music comes from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs, who also appears in the film. Singles including “Burial,” performed by Hathaway, and “My Mouth is Lonely For You” by Twigs are set to roll out ahead of the film’s release, with a seven track digital soundtrack following in April.
The cast further includes Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber, amplifying the film’s mix of fashion, fame, and fragility.
For CreaZion Studios, bringing titles like Mother Mary to local screens is part of a larger push.
“Whether you are a fan of elevated genres or you simply want to have a good time watching a movie, CreaZion Studios got you covered with an exciting lineup of film offerings that can be enjoyed on the best screen and great surround sound possible, in cinemas near you,” said RJ San Agustin, President and CEO of CreaZion Studios.
He added that by introducing some of the most disruptive and talked about films to the country and the wider Southeast Asian region, the company hopes to bridge human stories and experiences to this side of the world.
With its mix of pop spectacle and psychological tension, Mother Mary is less about chart topping hits and more about the cost of staying iconic.
On April 22, Filipino audiences will see Anne Hathaway in a role that asks what happens when the spotlight refuses to dim, even when the past demands it.
