Social media personality Bretman Rock reignited long-simmering tension with actress Vanessa Hudgens after publicly naming her as his “most disappointing celebrity encounter.” The revelation, shared during an episode of the Sweet or Savory podcast released on January 7, quickly gained traction online, not just for the perceived personal slight but for the deeper discussion it reopened about Filipino representation in global pop culture.
While celebrity run-ins gone wrong are hardly new, this particular rift has endured because it sits at the intersection of fame, visibility, and cultural authenticity. Over the years, Bretman’s comments about Hudgens have evolved from offhand shade to pointed critiques, culminating in a broader debate among fans about who truly embraces their Filipino roots and how that embrace is expressed.
During his appearance on the Sweet and Savory with Alyssa and AJ Rafael podcast, Rock was asked to name both the best and worst celebrity interactions he had experienced. When it came to the latter, he was direct, saying, “V.H. I don’t like her.” He traced the moment back to Coachella around 2017 or 2018, when he was attending the festival alongside the CEO of SugarBearHair, a brand he was connected to at the time.
According to Rock, the interaction became awkward when Hudgens appeared to misinterpret a wave meant for the brand executive. “I was trying to get his attention, so I’m like waving, not at her,” he explained, adding, “She looks at me and tries to hide.”
Addressing the situation bluntly, Rock said, “First of all, I’m not saying hi to you. I was always Team Sharpay,” and added, “B*tch, I’m not a fan.” He also recalled Hudgens positioning another person between them, a gesture he saw as dismissive. “She grabs her hand and makes her stand in front of her like to block her,” he explained, emphasizing, “You’re not above me, I’m not under you.”
He later expressed frustration what he perceived as detachment from Filipino culture, stating, “I’m Filipino, b**ch. Like, you can’t even like your own people?”

The Coachella incident later became linked to Rock’s broader criticisms of Hudgens’ connection to her Filipino heritage. Born in the Philippines and fluent in Ilocano, Rock has consistently emphasized Filipino identity in his public persona.
As Hudgens’ heritage became more visible following her appointment as a Global Tourism Ambassador for the Philippines in 2023, comparisons between the two intensified online.
That same year, Rock mocked a video of Hudgens struggling to pronounce “Palawan” during a tourism shoot, commenting, “Btch can’t even say Palawan.” The remark went viral, fueling discussion about cultural familiarity and representation.

Additional moments reinforced public perception of tension. In October 2023, Rock chose Olivia Rodrigo over Hudgens during a viral “This or That” game, a choice many interpreted as favoring celebrities who more openly embrace their Filipino roots. Around the same period, he appeared to pretend not to recognize Hudgens at the U.S. premiere of the Filipino film A Very Good Girl.
While Rock never directly challenged Hudgens’ appointment as tourism ambassador, he aligned with fans who felt he more authentically represented Filipino identity, describing himself as “unapologetically Pinoy” and suggesting that Hudgens’ engagement with her roots appeared more prominent when tied to professional opportunities.
As the discussion gained traction, many Filipino fans began echoing Rock’s sentiments. Some expressed that they had never seen Hudgens demonstrate visible pride in her Filipino heritage, contrasting her with other Filipino or Filipino-American artists who consistently celebrated their roots. For these fans, the debate was less about personal dislike and more about who they felt genuinely represents Filipino identity on a global stage, with Rock seen as embodying that connection more visibly.

Hudgens has not publicly responded to Rock’s comments. As a result, the narrative has largely been shaped by Rock’s perspective and public reaction. What began as an awkward festival moment has evolved into a wider conversation about cultural authenticity, visibility, and the ways Filipino identity is expressed and recognized within global celebrity culture.
