Cha Eun-woo Releases Statement Amid Tax Probe

On January 26, ASTRO member Cha Eun-woo released a statement addressing the National Tax Service (NTS) investigation over an alleged 20 billion won tax shortfall, his first response since the issue emerged.

While serving in the military, Cha apologized for causing worry and disappointment, saying he “sincerely bows his head” and is reflecting on his responsibilities as a citizen, including paying taxes.

The investigation centers on a family-run company reportedly established in 2019, which authorities say was used to route part of Cha’s entertainment income under lower corporate tax rates.

The NTS also noted the company lacked real operations, with its registered address matching his parents’ eel restaurant. The issue surfaced during a broader audit of his agency, Fantagio, which paid additional taxes in 2025.

Cha said his military enlistment was not an attempt to avoid the controversy but accepted responsibility for the situation.

“I will faithfully comply with all future tax-related procedures,” he added, promising to “humbly accept the final decision” of authorities.

Fantagio maintains the case is a dispute over tax interpretation and says the family company is a legitimate cultural planning entity. Some brands have already removed or hidden promotional content featuring Cha.

Cha closed his statement with gratitude for fans’ support and a commitment to hold himself to stricter standards moving forward.

The tax review is ongoing, and he is set to be discharged from military service in January 2027.
