Editor’s Letter: 2026 Is the New 2016

I’ve been listening to my 2016 playlist while pumping iron at the gym lately. The music hits harder than it should, not because I want to go back, but because my body remembers the feeling. I’m standing in 2026, but something about this year feels strangely familiar.

2016 was chaotic, expressive, and hopeful. It was the year we scrolled on our phones without knowing they’d one day control how we see the world. It was loud fashion, wild food trends, viral games, and a country that believed discipline could fix everything, only to realize later what that choice would cost. Many Gen Z readers were still young then, but the exhaustion they feel now didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s inherited.

After years of perfection, polish, and performance, culture is loosening again. Minimalism feels corporate. AI-smooth content feels rather skin-deep. We want texture, personality, and proof of life. Just like in 2016, people are choosing to feel whether through music, movement, fashion, humor, and community.

2026 isn’t nostalgia. It’s a reset.

And at ZEEN, we’re listening closely. This year, we’re choosing honesty over hype, context over clout, and expression over perfection. If 2016 taught us how to be seen, 2026 is reminding us not to disappear.

Welcome to the year we let loose…

Intentionally.
