From Local Screens to Global Reviews: ‘Sunshine’ Breaks Through on Letterboxd

Filipino cinema continues to be championed in the global scene as Antoinette jadaone’s Sunshine scored a moment on global film radar this year earning serious love on Letterboxd’s 2025 Year in Review lists.

The coming-of-age film starring Maris Racal landed notable placements across multiple categories on the film-focused social platform, where viewers log, rate, and passionately review what they watch. Sunshine ranked fifth among the top highest-rated narrative films by a female director, as one of the highest-rated Asian films of the year, and seventh Highest Rated Drama of the Year.

Directed and written by Jadaone, Sunshine follows the story of a dedicated young gymnast whose Olympic dreams are challenged by an unexpected pregnancy just before national team tryouts. The film explores her emotional journey, societal pressures, and the complicated choices she faces against the backdrop of her sport and her life in Manila.

The strength of Sunshine’s appearance on Letterboxd, a platform with a vibrant community of global cinephiles or film enthusiasts, reflects how the film resonated with audiences beyond traditional box-office or festival circuits. It stood out not just as a well-made drama, but as a story that invited conversation, reflection, and emotional engagement among its audiences online.

Racal’s performance anchors the film, supported by a strong ensemble cast. The layered storytelling and thoughtful portrayal of personal conflict have helped Sunshine maintain visibility on streaming charts even months after its theatrical run, with continued discussions around its themes of ambition, identity, and resilience.

For Philippine films in 2025, Sunshine’s recognition on an international platform like Letterboxd is a sign of how local stories can capture attention well beyond their origin when rooted in honest performances and deliberate direction.
