Maris Racal bags first-ever best actress award for Sunshine

The actress earns recognition for her stellar performance in the highly-acclaimed, coming-of-age film, Sunshine.

Maris Racal marked a new milestone in her career as she bagged her first best actress win for her 2024 film, Sunshine.

The actress received the Best Lead Performance of 2025 award from the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers (SFFR) at the 6th Pinoy Rebyu Awards. The ceremony took place at the Ateneo de Manila University on Monday, June 22.

Racal took to social media to celebrate her debut best actress accolade.  She expressed her gratitude to the institution: “Thank you, [SFFR], for this recognition. This will always be special to me.”

The actress was joined by Sunshine director Antoinette Jadaone, who took home the best director accolade, in the same awards ceremony.

Racal gained traction for her performance in Sunshine both locally and globally. The film, tapping on social issues such as teenage pregnancy and societal expectations in the Philippines, earned recognition in Berlin International Film Festival and Letterboxd, among others.
