Meet Yohan Mesa, Filipino Trainee on Produce 101 Japan

Filipino-Japanese Yohan Emmanuel Mesa begins a new shot at debut as a contender on Produce 101 Japan: Shinsekai.

Filipino-Japanese trainee Yohan Emmanuel Mesa is stepping back into the survival show spotlight, this time on Produce 101 Japan: Shinsekai, where 101 hopefuls are competing for a spot in a 12-member global boy group.

The 20-year-old, born in Cagayan Valley, entered the competition earlier this year as part of its 101-member lineup, marking a new chapter after an already eventful pre-debut run.

Mesa was first introduced as a contestant in January 2026, ahead of the show’s March premiere. As of early April, he is ranked 78th, placing him in the lower tier of the competition as the first elimination round approaches.

Despite limited screen time in the opening episodes, viewers have started to take notice of his steady presence, describing him as a quiet but sincere trainee with gradual but visible growth.

In his “Meet the World” introduction, Mesa leaned into his Filipino roots by showcasing arnis, offering a cultural moment that set him apart early on. It is a small but strategic move in a season that now includes global voters, or “Sekai Producers,” alongside Japan’s domestic audience.

For longtime survival show watchers, Mesa’s name may already sound familiar. He previously competed in Be The NEXT: 9 Dreamers, where he placed second overall after a steady climb from the lower ranks. The result secured him a spot in the debut lineup, but plans fell through after financial issues halted the group’s launch under MLD Entertainment.

Rather than stepping back, Mesa re-entered the trainee circuit, now bringing with him a reputation as an all-rounder shaped by previous high-stakes competition. Fans who followed his earlier run have pointed to his vocal stability, dance skills, and creative input in styling and concepts as strengths that have yet to be fully highlighted on Shinsekai.

Within the show, he is currently placed in Class G following initial evaluations, a position that often limits early exposure. Still, his supporters are rallying behind a familiar narrative, the underdog with proven potential. Online, he is already being framed as a “sleeper pick,” with fan campaigns encouraging daily votes through the Mnet Plus platform ahead of the first cutoff.

As Produce 101 Japan: Shinsekai moves deeper into its group mission stages, Mesa’s trajectory remains one to watch. Whether he can convert quiet consistency into a breakout moment will likely define if this second shot leads to the debut that slipped through his fingers the first time.
