Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker praises Filipiñana on Instagram, spotlighting the international recognition of Filipino cinema.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker recently shared the film on his Instagram Stories, calling it “amazing.” For a film that has already been making waves internationally, having Baker, one of the most acclaimed voices in contemporary independent cinema, take notice is a significant nod.

Baker made Oscar history with Anora, becoming the first person to win four Oscars for the same film in one night, including Best Picture, Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing.
His support also feels especially meaningful given Baker’s longstanding commitment to independent filmmaking and stories that exist outside the traditional Hollywood mainstream. And now, with Filipiñana continuing its international run, from its Sundance debut and Special Jury Award for Creative Vision to its selection as the Philippines’ official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, the film is reaching an increasingly global audience.

So when a filmmaker of Baker’s stature comes across Filipiñana, shares it with his audience, and simply says it’s “amazing,” it’s a small Instagram Story with a pretty big significance: the film is getting noticed by some of the people shaping the conversation around cinema today.
It’s also part of a bigger shift. Filipino films and filmmakers are increasingly being seen, talked about, and recognized in spaces beyond the local industry. And moments like this matter, not because a Hollywood name has to validate Filipino cinema, but because it shows that our stories can travel, connect, and hold their own wherever they’re seen.
