Filipino LGBTQIA+ individuals have always been spearheading and influencing beauty innovations in the Philippines, challenging traditional beauty norms and fostering a more inclusive and diverse landscape. Drag artists use their extraordinary makeup skills as a form of self-expression. It is also a protest to push the boundaries of beauty standards. In addition to the drag community, queer makeup artists, beauty influencers, visual artists, and fashion creatives have been instrumental in shaping modern Filipino beauty culture. Through their artistry, innovation, and visibility, they challenge conventional standards and actively promote inclusivity and representation across the industry.
- Challenging Beauty Standards:

Filipino queers have pushed back against the historically dominant Eurocentric beauty standards in the country, promoting a more diverse understanding of beauty. They have achieved this through personal branding, active use of social media, and increased visibility in beauty brands—some of which they themselves own, like Patrick Starr’s (@patrickstarrr) One Size Beauty and Bretman Rock’s (@bretmanrock) collaboration with multiple makeup brands like BLK cosmetics. Making space for authenticity, representation, and pride in the community and Filipino beauty.
- Drag as a Form of Art & Protest:

Drag queens use makeup as a form of self-expression and a means of challenging norms. Marina Summers (@marinaxsummers) and Pura Luka Vega (@puralukavega) are both prominent figures in the Philippine Drag scene, who have involved themselves in championing Filipino Culture in their competitive and performance aspects of drag. Their elaborate makeup styles and dramatic personas both entertain audiences and push the boundaries of conventional gender norms. Moreover, their unique fashion choices have made a lasting impact on mainstream fashion and continue to inspire it.
Inclusion and Advocacy:

Filipino queer individuals such as Mimiyuuuh (@mimiyuuuh), Deo Cabrera (@deogelo_), and Rica Salomon (@rica.salomon) have harnessed their platforms to champion inclusion and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using their makeup artistry and bold fashion sense to defy societal expectations and empower others. Rica is an out and proud Transpinay who believes that makeup is not just a tool to enhance beauty, but also a powerful means of self-empowerment. Mimiyuuuh has transformed the landscape of beauty influencer culture with their unapologetic personality and authenticity. Meanwhile, Deo is redefining clothing norms through their gender-neutral fashion choices, challenging conventional ideas of style. They have encouraged others to live openly and authentically, celebrate their individuality, and express themselves with confidence.
- Influence on Local Beauty Industry:

Queer makeup artists, hair stylists, and photographers are at the forefront of the local beauty industry, showcasing their distinct perspectives and creativity to shape and elevate the field. Among them are Paul Nebres (@paulnebres), BJ Pascual (@bjpascual), and Jelly Eugenio (@jellyeugenio) who have shaped the beauty industry through their fresh, vibrant, and colorful vision for their clients. Paul is a sought-after hairstylist in the Philippines, known for his impeccable skills and creativity—having styled high-profile personalities such as Heart Evangelista. BJ stands out for his avant-garde shoots and bold artistic vision, collaborating with top celebrities and major brands. Meanwhile, Jelly is a celebrated makeup artist who masterfully highlights individuality and redefines beauty through his unique perspective. By sharing their talents, they have uplifted fellow queer creatives and become inspirations for other queer people.
In essence, Filipino queers have played a crucial role in shaping the beauty landscape, moving beyond heteronormative beauty standards and fostering a more inclusive and vibrant aesthetic.
