The Man of Steel Returns: Superman Is a Soaring Triumph

Reintroducing an icon like Superman isn’t easy—especially in a time when audiences are more cynical, and superhero fatigue is very, very real. But if there’s anyone who could bring back the charm, awe, and emotional clarity of the Man of Steel, it’s James Gunn. Superman is a confident, heartfelt launch for the new DC Universe—one that brings the spirit of the comics to life with clarity and care, grounded in everything that’s made Superman timeless: hope, meaning, and the unwavering belief in doing what’s right.

From start to finish, the film delivers on everything it promised and more. It’s full of hope, charm, and that wide-eyed wonder that has always defined the character. It’s earnest without being cheesy, and clever without ever losing its sincerity. Gunn’s tone walks a tightrope few superhero films manage to balance: it’s comic book-y in the best way, but still grounded in emotion and heart.

“I always liked Superman,” Gunn shared during the press conference. “But I asked myself: what could a different sort of Superman look like? I wanted to create that feeling I had when I first discovered the character—a universe that’s grounded in real people and real issues. The joy of my life is bringing Superman to the screen and giving him more life, more depth, and new ideas about who he is.”

That vision comes to life most clearly through David Corenswet, who delivers a career-defining turn as Superman, bringing sincerity, heroism, and a sense of pure-hearted idealism to the role. He’s hopeful without being naïve, strong without being detached. His Superman isn’t just a figure of power, but one of compassion—someone who listens, connects, and believes in the good. You feel his quiet integrity in every scene, and Corenswet carries the legacy with grace and gravitas.

For Corenswet, the journey began with an intense physical transformation. “I started at the gym—just me and the weights. And in that process, I felt deeply alone,” he said. “That became central to how I connected with Superman. He struggles with feeling isolated from the people he loves most. He wants to belong, but he’s not like everyone else. That’s such a universal experience—to be surrounded by people and still feel lonely.”

That emotional core is central to the film’s success, but another of the film’s most powerful elements is the relationship between Clark and Lois. Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are electric together from the first moment they share the screen. Brosnahan is phenomenal as Lois Lane—quick, fearless, funny, and razor-sharp. She commands every scene she’s in and brings a fresh, modern energy to the character that still respects her roots. It’s just as much her movie as it is his, and fans of Lois will be more than satisfied.

“She’s a superhero in her own right,” Brosnahan explained. “She’s not easily knocked off balance—until Clark comes along. She can’t logic her way out of what she feels for him. It’s true love, and it completely catches her off-guard.”

Nicholas Hoult delivers a ferocious take on Lex Luthor. He’s intense, volatile, and fully unhinged in all the right ways. This Lex is dangerous not just because of his intellect, but because of how far he’s willing to go. There’s a fury behind his actions that makes him one of DC’s most menacing on-screen villains yet—and Hoult leans into it with total commitment.

Visually and sonically, Superman is stunning. The score soars, the cinematography is clean and vibrant, the action is exciting without ever becoming overwhelming, and the emotional beats are given the space they need to resonate. And it’s all wrapped in a package that looks and sounds incredible in a way that every moment feels big—not just in scale, but in emotional weight. When this Superman takes flight, you feel it in your chest.

And beyond the big set pieces and powerful themes, it’s the little surprises that elevate the film even more. A few clever cameos steal the scene without taking away from the story, hinting at a larger universe to come without ever feeling forced. Another standout is Krypto, Superman’s loyal dog, who ends up being one of the film’s most lovable and unexpectedly emotional touchpoints. More than just a super-powered sidekick, Krypto adds soul to the story and leaves a lasting impression.

Ultimately, Superman is the movie the world needs right now. It’s a powerful, promising start to the new DCU—one that remembers that capes are cool, but character is everything. James Gunn has crafted a love letter to hope and good, and it lands with impact.
