Tumblr Blocked in the Philippines Amid Gambling Crackdown

Filipino users report access issues after Tumblr was flagged as a “gambling site” by CICC, raises questions from platform fans....

Filipino Tumblr users opened the app this week only to be met with a splash page from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) warning that the site is an unlicensed gambling platform.

The CICC confirmed they are investigating the “alleged blocking” and treating it as a priority. Early reports suggest Tumblr may have been mistakenly flagged in an automated sweep of gambling sites, possibly triggered by ads or spam bots promoting betting content.

This incident comes at a time when online gambling is highly visible in the Philippines. Billboards advertising betting sites can be seen along major roads, highways, and malls, making it easier for automated filters to misclassify unrelated platforms like Tumblr.

Tumblr responded on social media, saying they are “heartbroken that Filipino users cannot access the platform.”

The company emphasized that Tumblr is intended as a space for people of “every nationality, background, identity, and point of view” and that they are actively working with authorities to restore service.

Historically, Tumblr has faced global content restrictions, including the 2018 NSFW ban and a partial reversal in 2022 allowing mature artistic content. The current block is unrelated to these policies and appears to be a technical or regulatory error affecting certain networks.

Access is inconsistent—PLDT, Smart, and Converge users report blocks, while Globe subscribers mostly still get through. While waiting for a permanent fix, users have found temporary ways to get back online. Some are switching to Google Public DNS, using a VPN, relying on mobile data, or opening Tumblr on a browser instead of the app.

Fans are hopeful the platform will soon be fully restored. Once Tumblr is back, Filipino users can continue scrolling, posting, and sharing without interruptions.
