What Baby Punch Taught Us About Life

A Zeen listicle for people who cried over a monkey at 3 am

The internet has a new emotional support animal and it is literally a baby monkey named Punch. He went viral after videos showed him carrying a stuffed orangutan everywhere because his mom abandoned him, and zoo keepers gave the toy so he would have comfort while learning to live with the troop.

People across TikTok and X started saying “keep going Punch” because they saw themselves in him, which says a lot about how lonely and hopeful our generation can be at the same time.

So here are the things Baby Punch quietly taught us about life..

  1. Everyone Needs Something Soft to Hold On To

Punch clings to a plush toy because baby monkeys need maternal comfort, and without it they can struggle with anxiety and loneliness.  And honestly, same.

Sometimes your plushie is a playlist, a group chat, a comfort movie, or a routine coffee run. Healing is not aesthetic, it is repetitive, awkward, and sometimes shaped like a stuffed orangutan.

You are allowed to have emotional crutches while you figure things out.

  1. Being Rejected Does Not Mean You Are Unlovable

Punch was rejected by his own mom and had trouble fitting in with other monkeys at first, which is normal but still heartbreaking.

We have all been there in a smaller way, when a friend group ghosts you or a job interview never replies.

Rejection is information, not identity. It tells you where you are not meant to stay, but it does not tell you who you are.

  1. Learning Social Cues Is a Lifetime Skill

Zoo staff said Punch is still learning how to navigate social interactions, because monkeys also have rules and hierarchies.

So when you cringe about that one thing you said in 2017, relax. Everyone is socially awkward while they grow, and growth is literally embarrassing.

  1. Small Acts of Kindness Change Everything

At one point an older monkey hugged Punch and the internet collectively sobbed into their phones.

Sometimes all someone needs is one person who does not laugh at them, who lets them sit at their table, who texts first.

You can be that person without posting about it.

  1. Found Family Is Real

Punch’s toy became his surrogate mom, and later the troop slowly started accepting him. Family is not always blood. Sometimes it is the friend who listens at 2 am, the coworker who saves you a seat, or the dog who waits at the door like you are a celebrity. You can build love from scratch.

  1. Healing Is Slow and Not Linear

Zoo keepers said Punch is gradually learning to socialize and adapt, which is exactly how recovery works.   Some days you feel strong. Some days you carry your plushie around. Both are part of the same journey.

  1. You Can Be Strong and Still Be Soft

Zoo staff described Punch as mentally strong even though he depends on comfort objects.  Strength is not being numb. Strength is letting yourself feel and still showing up.

  1. Sometimes the Whole World Sees You Trying

Punch went viral not because he was perfect, but because he was trying.  And honestly, trying is brave. Trying when you are scared is heroic. Trying when no one claps is growth.

Final Thought

Baby Punch did not ask to be a metaphor, but here we are crying over a monkey holding a plushie because we know what it feels like to want love and still keep going.

So if today feels heavy, just remember the cutest macaque monkey in Japan carrying his stuffed orangutan like a badge of hope.

Keep going, Punch.

Keep going, you.
