Who are Sharmaine and Vanessa, Filipino internet’s New Memes?
- June 1, 2026
From supermarket posts to spam TikTok comments, Sharmaine and Vanessa have been the internet’s newest inside joke.
Across social media posts, if you happen to spot a talking orange and spot the names “Sharmaine, Vanessa, and Melanie,” you are not alone. Now the question is, where did these new internet memes originate?
While many have been joking about them online, Sharmaine and Vanessa aren’t real people. The characters originated from a series of viral skits by content creator BAET.
Sharmaine first appeared in a BAET skit featuring an orange frustrated that its name was simply based on its color. When asked what name it would rather have, the orange confidently chose “Sharmaine,” launching one of the internet’s most unexpected memes. “Naiinis naman ako ‘te, kasi parang hindi naman ako pinag isipan.” The orange in the skit started in the now popular video.

The orange was then asked what name it prefers; it answered, “Sharmaine.” The skit ended with another persona telling the so-called orange to notarize the name.

From there, this became a new funny buzz around social media, from SM City Legazpi calling their fresh produce the trending name to online users changing the word “orange” to just “Sharmaine.”
In a follow-up skit, a fly references Sharmaine and the now-famous notary joke before deciding it also deserves a proper name. That’s how Vanessa entered the conversation.

The fly then suggested that they want their own name; thus, the name Vanessa was born. Social media users also joined in on the fun. A TikTok user even posted a video of a fly at a mall, humorously quoting, “Ay andito si Vanessa!”

BAET is a TikTok personality with over 330K+ followers and has garnered 23.9M likes (as of writing this article). Other than the Sharmaine and Vanessa lore, BAET is also known for the “Bhe, si Taylor Swift ‘to bhe‘” skit. This trend also garnered multiple interactions, as users applied the same filter and some even acted out as different artists.
