Why Direk Ma-an’s ‘2 Valid IDs’ Became A Box Office Phenomenon

Asuncion-Dagñalan turns one family’s fight for medical assistance into a portrait of bureaucracy, healthcare barriers, and the people left waiting.

In 2 Valid IDs, government red tape becomes a life-or-death crisis for a family seeking medical aid. Directed by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and written by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, the more than ₱80-million drama stars Marietta “Pokwang” Subong as Sylvia, an Ilocana farmer struggling against administrative hurdles to secure healthcare for her husband Ramon (Joey Marquez). The film explores how rigid documentation requirements deepen financial and emotional burdens for families in need.

These circumstances give 2 Valid IDs a point of entry beyond its social commentary. The paperwork at its center is ordinary; the consequences of being unable to produce it are anything but.

Its writer Raz witnessed the difficulties of securing documents and medicine while caring for his late mother, who was confined in a hospital in Pangasinan. Although the family was in a private hospital, accessing what they needed meant navigating crowded wards and hallways in another building.

“He really experienced what happened in Two Valid IDs because his mother was confined in a hospital in the province, which was in Pangasinan,” Dagñalan shares with ZEEN.

Grieving his mother’s death, Raz initially set the experience aside until a meme about needing an ID to apply for another ID inspired him to connect his personal ordeal to systemic red tape.

Rooted in real life, 2 Valid IDs illustrates how administrative hurdles compound the strain on families facing medical crises. Director Dagñalan collaborated with cinematographer Neil Daza and production designer Mao Fadul to physically convey this pressure through heat, congestion, and visible sweat.

“I wanted… them to feel exactly what the characters are feeling inside the frame,” she said. “Like, for example, ’yung init, ’yung maaamoy nila ’yung baho, mafi-feel nila ’yung lagkit ng pawis.”

To evoke the characters’ psychological strain, Dagñalan worked to immerse audiences in the suffocating heat and sensory discomfort of hospital wards. Drawing from her Pampanga roots and Ilocos Norte research, she noted that rural farmers prioritizing daily survival rarely have the time or resources to secure administrative paperwork.

“These farmers are so busy with their lives surviving 24/7,” she explained, emphasizing that obtaining valid IDs is a secondary concern when basic survival is at stake. Grossing more than ₱80 million, Two Valid IDs turns bureaucratic obstacles into an urgent human drama on healthcare inequality.
