Zsazsa Zaturnnah earns commendation at Annecy Film Festival

The animated adaptation of the iconic Filipino comic received praise at its world premiere in France.

The animated film adaptation of Zsazsa Zaturnnah received a standing ovation during its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, marking a major achievement for Philippine animation on the global stage.

The milestone was celebrated by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), which shared photos from the premiere. Produced by Philippine animation studios CreaZion Studios and Rocketsheep Studio, the film drew praise from international audiences at one of the world’s most prestigious animation festivals.

Directed by Avid Liongoren and based on the acclaimed comic book by Carlo Vergara, Zsazsa Zaturnnah follows Ada, a gay beautician who transforms into the titular superhero. The character has long been regarded as one of the most iconic figures in Philippine queer pop culture.

The animated adaptation spent six years in production before making its world premiere at Annecy. The project was first showcased at the festival’s Work-in-Progress section in 2025, offering audiences an early look at its development.

This year, Zsazsa Zaturnnah was selected for Annecy’s Midnight Specials program, which highlights bold, unconventional, and adult-oriented animated features. The film was also co-produced by international partners, further expanding its reach beyond Philippine audiences.

With its blend of Filipino humor, mythology, and LGBTQ+ representation, Zsazsa Zaturnnah introduces a beloved local superhero to global audiences while showcasing the growing capabilities of Filipino animators and storytellers.
