‘Our Yesterday’s Escape’ Brings the Univerkada Together for One Last Chapter

The latest look at the animated film teases a friendship-driven adventure inspired by Filipino mythology.

For three years, every new University Series adaptation introduced another romance lore This time, however, the story was about the characters’ growth throughout the years and how its audience grew up with the characters.

The grand media conference for Our Yesterday’s Escape reunited the ever-growing “Univerkada” as stars from across the franchise gathered to celebrate the sixth and final adaptation of Gwy Saludes’ bestselling novel series.

More than introducing a new love story led by Jairus Aquino and Nicole Omillo, the event became a full-circle moment for the cast and the readers who have followed the series since its debut in 2023.

The University Series first made its way to the screen with The Rain in España, starring Heaven Peralejo and Marco Gallo. Its success paved the way for Safe Skies, Archer led by Jerome Ponce and Krissha Viaje, Chasing in the Wild with Gab Lagman and Hyacinth Callado, Avenues of the Diamond starring Aubrey Caraan and Lance Carr, Golden Scenery of Tomorrow featuring Bea Binene and Wilbert Ross, before arriving at its final chapter through Our Yesterday’s Escape.

Rather than existing as standalone romances, each adaptation expanded the same fictional university, allowing familiar characters to appear across different stories. Over time, that interconnected world became what fans affectionately call the “Univerkada,” a community that extended beyond the pages of the novels and onto the screen.

During the media conference, familiar faces returned to support the franchise’s final installment. Original leads Heaven Peralejo and Marco Gallo joined the celebration alongside the succeeding generations of University Series stars, highlighting how the adaptations have continued to pass the torch from one couple to the next.

While Our Yesterday’s Escape introduces Jairus Aquino and Nicole Omillo as Shan and Kierra, the finale also serves as a farewell to a franchise that has remained closely tied to a generation of Filipino readers. Long before the adaptations, Gwy Saludes’ novels built a devoted following online, becoming one of the most recognizable interconnected romance series among young readers.

By the time the final adaptation arrives, many of those readers have also reached a new chapter in their own lives. Students who first discovered The Rain in España have since graduated, entered the workforce, or continued growing alongside the characters they watched on screen.

As Our Yesterday’s Escape prepares to close the University Series, it carries more than the ending of one love story. It marks the conclusion of a six-series journey that introduced new stars, built one of local streaming’s most recognizable fictional universes, and gave an entire generation of readers the chance to watch the stories they once imagined finally come to life.
